Moorlarben Coal Celebrity Golf Classic

Moorlarben Coal Celebrity Golf Classic was held recently with everyone reporting its success. Members of the community have been pairing up with sporting celebrities for the 8 years this event has been running, including our Chairman Allan Codrington.

“It’s improved each year in that the crowds are bigger, it’s more organised, and it’s just a great event with good celebrities. Pioneer House is one of the beneficiaries of the event, and is grateful for every donation”.

Christmas @ Pioneer House

Residents of Pioneer with staff, family and friends celebrated Christmas with a couple of parties singing Christmas carols and a visit with Santa and our house elf Cassie. There were also craft sessions, visiting school choir and Christmas light tours to admire the spectacular decorations and lights Mudgee has to offer.

For the month of October 2018 Pioneer House has joined the Mudgee Community in the McGrath Foundation ‘Pink Up Mudgee’ in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.  Staff and residents have dressed up, enjoyed ‘pink afternoon tea’ and raised valuable funds to show our support.  Thanks to Annabelle & staff for organising our activities and raffle.

Pioneer House residents ‘feel the wind in their hair’

Our residents have enjoyed a special treat this morning with the boys from Demark ‘Cycling without Age’ taking the residents on a cycling tour of Mudgee in tri-shaws, specially designed bikes.
The residents absolutely loved being outdoors on such a lovely spring day, out on bikes just like the good old days. Prime 7 News interviewed some of our residents and it will be shown on tonights news at 6pm. The Travel with a Purpose Tour will go on to Canberra next. Thank you from all the staff & residents for a wonderful experience and we wish you all the best for the rest of the tour. Thank you also to Board Member Ross Mayberry for initiating such a fun morning for everyone.

Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour

What a special privilage to be visited by the Emirates Melbourne Cup here at Pioneer House. The residents were thrilled with the impressive glory of the cup and the wonderful stories told by Wendy Green, owner of 1999 winner of the Melbourne Cup ‘Rogan Josh’. Thank you to the VRC for such an inspirational afternoon and reminding everyone that ‘Dreams can come true’

‘Pay It Forward Bears’ for our Residents

Joy Davies never expected a simple idea she had in July last year – to encourage others to a provide a random act of kindness – would have taken off like it has.

Nearly nine months later, the Pay It Forward Bears Promotion Facebook group has over 1,500 members of its tight-knit community, with one purpose: making teddy bears to give to children’s hospitals, ambulance stations, cancer wards, aged care facilities, and to anyone who has just needed a hug.

Joy’s niece, Cassie Glazier, heard the call of the ‘pay-it-forward’ initiative from her aunt, and last Friday gave out nearly a hundred home made bears to the residents of Pioneer House, where she works.

It was an instant hit, with the bears lighting up the days of many of the residents and, just like the campaign that kicked the whole drive off, it was a success.

The far-flung spread of the action group is nothing short of impressive, and Joy is over the moon that her brainchild has impacted so many people.

“I still can’t get over that we’ve made over five thousand bears since July. It’s just phenomenal,” Ms Davies, who moved from Mudgee to Raymond Terrace, said.

”If you are interested in getting involved, join the Pay It Forward Bears Promotion Facebook group.

With enormous thanks to Joy Davies and the generous members of AMEA Pay it Forward Embroidery Group (RAOK Bears) AMEA Randon Act of Kindness Bears.

Residents from Pioneer House undertook an excursion to Moolarben Coal Mine on the 25th of August 2016. This was a terrific experience for the residents and the staff who supported them on this visit. This outing included an informative presentation on the mining process and a tour of the mine site. This visit held special significance for some on the tour as it was an opportunity to reflect on their time working in the local mining industry, appreciate changes since those times and to experience the workplace of younger family members. Pioneer House thank the team at Moolarben Coal for the opportunity to gain greater insight into the significance of this local industry and for their ongoing support of our ageing community.

Maintaining your interests

Some of our fantastic activities include – Exercise groups, Bingo, knitting groups, outings, card games, walking groups, shopping trips, coffee stops, arts & craft, yoga, poetry reading, music groups, men’s groups and gardening.

We celebrate calendar events like Australia Day, Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Anzac day, Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day and Melbourne Cup. Activities change daily and are written up on the many notice boards around the facility.

There are church services, visiting entertainers, a visiting childcare centre, concerts, movie sessions and happy hour. Some of our residents used to attend U3A classes in the community, so we organised for the U3A to hold classes at Pioneer House. Currently there are three classes running each week, including Mah-jong and painting, There is so much to do … if you want to!

Mostly the activities we offer are influenced by the residents themselves, who complete a comprehensive Lifestyle Questionnaire on admission. The responses are then utilised by the Activities Officers to develop their programs. The Questionnaire summarises the resident’s cultural, medical and religious background, which also enables our staff to accommodate a smooth transition into the facility, and respond to any issues accordingly.

We want to encourage the residents to keep up with the activities that they enjoyed prior to admission, so we will provide for their wishes as much as possible within our Activity Programs.
